Driving Licence

A Driving Licence is an official document confirming that its holder is appropriately qualified to operate a motor vehicle. These licenses are issued by the Motor Vehicles Department through its Regional Transport Offices (RTO). Individuals aged 16 and above are eligible for a licence to drive non-gear two-wheelers up to 55 cc, while those aged 18 and above can apply for licences to drive geared two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
The application process involves obtaining a Learners Licence initially. After a minimum of one month from the issuance of the Learner Licence, the applicant can apply for a Permanent Driving Licence

Step 1: Learner's Licence

Check the List of the Required Documents
Make a checklist of the documents required.
In case you already have Driving Licence of a different class and are applying for Learner’s Licence then skip the Required Documents Step.
Apply for Learner’s Licence
Go to the Official Transport Department website Parivahan.gov.in and follow the step:
1. Open Sarathi (Driving Licence Related Services)
2. Select Your State.
3. Click on ‘Apply Online’ and Select ‘New Learners Licence’.
4. Select ‘Applicant does not hold Driving/ Learner Licence’, or In Case you hold a driving licence of another Class then select ‘Applicant holds Driving Licence, Enter DL Number’ and Click on ‘Submit’
5. Fill in the Details and Submit the Application Form.
6. Note down the Application Number.
Upload Documents and Fee Payment
Continue to proceed to the next steps of your application.
Upload the Required Documents and Proceed to Fee Payment.
If you have to open your application form again click on ‘Apply Online’ and select ‘Application Status’
Schedule an Appointment for Learner’s Licence Test
Select ‘LL SLOT BOOK’ and select a date and time for your Learner’s Licence Test. In case you already hold a Driving Licence of another class, There’s no need to apply for the test.
Prepare for Your Learner’s Licence Test
To prepare for the Leaner’s Licence Test Download the Questions Bank from Official Transport Department Website: Sample Questions Bank
You can prepare for the test by taking the Transport Department’s Official Mock Test on Sarathi.
(Learner’s Licence Test in Maharashtra is Conducted Only in Marathi and English.)
Appear for the Learner’s Licence Test
You’ll be briefed about the Test at the Exam Hall by RTO Officials before appearing for your Test. (Typically the Test requires Answering 10 questions Correctly out of 15 questions to Pass).
Collect the Learner’s Licence
After Successfully Passing the Learner’s Licence Test, You will be Handed your Learner’s Licence.
Apply for Permanent Driving Licence
A Learner’s Licence Holder is Eligible to Apply for a Permanent Driving Licence after at least 30 days from the Date of Issue of the Learner’s Licence.

Step 2: Permanent Licence

Documents Required
A Learner’s Licence Holder is Eligible to Apply for a Permanent Driving Licence after at least 30 days from the Date of Issue of the Learner’s Licence.
Documents Required are:
1. Original Learner’s Licence.
2. Original Form 2 (Learner’s Licence Application Form).
3. Original Driving Licence, If the applicant already holds a Driving Licence of another Class of Vehicle.
Apply for Permanent Driving Licence
Go to the Official Transport Department website Parivahan.gov.in and follow the step:
1. Open Sarathi (Driving Licence Related Services).
2. Select Your State.
3. Click on ‘Apply Online’ and Select ‘New Driving Licence’.
4. Fill in the Learner’s Licence Number and Date of Birth.
5. Fill in the Details and Submit the Application Form.
6. Note down the Application Number.
Upload Documents and Fee Payment
Continue to proceed to the next steps of your application.
Upload the Required Documents and Proceed to Fee Payment.
If you have to open your application form again click on ‘Apply Online’ and select ‘Application Status’.
Schedule an Appointment for Driver’s Competency Test
Select ‘DL SLOT BOOK’ and select a date and time for your Driving Licence Test.
Additional Test Track Fees and Test Vehicle Fees may be needed.
Prepare for Your Driving Licence Test
The Driver’s Competency Test also known as Skill Test included three stages:
1. Driving the Vehicle on a Figure 8 Track. (For Two wheeler and Four Wheeler)
2. Driving a Vehicle Forward – Diagonal Reverse – Forward – Diagonal reverse. (Only for Four Wheeler)
3. Driving a Vehicle Forward on a Steep Inclination – Stopping – Moving Forward Without the Vehicle Rolling Back. (Only for Four Wheeler)
Appear for Your Driving Licence Test
The Driver’s Competency Test also known as Skill Test Typically included three stages:
1. Driving the Vehicle on a Figure 8 Track. (For Two wheeler and Four Wheeler)
2. Driving a vehicle on an ‘H’ Track: starting with forwarding – Diagonal Reverse – Forward – Diagonal reverse. (Only for Four Wheeler)
3. Driving a Vehicle on Gradient: Forward on a Steep Inclination – Stopping – Moving Forward Without the Vehicle Rolling Back. (Only for Four Wheeler) You’ll be briefed about the Test at the Exam Hall by the RTO Officials before your Test Starts.
After Successfully Passing the Driving Licence Test
RTO will print and send your Driving Licence on your Postal Address through the Speedpost.

Please Note
  • Applicant Must Visit RTO Twice:
    Once for Learner’s Licence Test and
    Once for Permanent Licence Driving Test.
  • In Case of Applicant already has a Driving Licence of another Vehicle Class, Then the applicant shall apply for ‘Additional Endorsement of Driving Licence’ (AEDL)
